Established by Captain James Forsyth on his exploration of the Central Indian Highlands, The Bori Wildlife Sanctuary is considered one of the oldest protected areas in the country. The sanctuary along with Satpura National Park and Pachmarhi Sanctuary make up the Saptura Tiger Reserve, which is the largest Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh. This relatively unexplored wildlife reserve is one of the best-kept secrets of Madhya Pradesh! It is located in the northern foothills of the Satpura Range in the Hoshangabad district. Majestically bound by the Satpura National Park to the north and east, and gently restrained by the Tawa River to the west. Over the last decade the forest department has conducted one of the most successful voluntary relocation programs in the country. As a result, there are now several grasslands that have formed on the erstwhile village sites. The grasslands are perfect habitats for repopulation of prey and predator alike. It has incredibly rich biodiversit...y and an excellent array of flora and fauna to charm the most hardened nature enthusiast. It houses Tropical Mixed Deciduous forests, subtype Teak forests, and Riparian forests along the streams. Visitors are entranced by dense foliage, fewer crowds, and very little overlapping traffic. This feeling of being lost in the heart of nature is often deeply transformational. More than 270 species of birds are reported from this IBA (Important Bird Area) and are protected by the Government of India. There are also abundant sightings of rare sentient animal species like chital, sambar, nilgai, striped hyena, chinkara, gaur, four-horned antelope, rhesus macaques, leopard, sloth bear, wild dog and the magnificent tiger

Exciting Park activities include 4x4 Safari drives. Bori is also one of the rare sanctuaries, where guided walking safaris are permitted as a means to explore the park. Lodges located near the park gate have trained naturalists who can elevate your jungle experience with their expertise and passion for this area. Buffer Rides are also a special experience, where visitors can participate in night patrolling with experienced guides in Buffer Zones, where humans and animals coexist in complete harmony. Cycling and exploring the rural and buffer landscape is also something that is very engaging for guests who are seeking adventure.

Look out for Indian giant squirrels, barking deer, leopards, sloth bear, wild dog and the tiger! There are exciting discoveries in store for fauna enthusiasts and avid birders too. Though animals appear a little shy because they are unused to human presence but this is what makes the sightings even more special. There are old caves to be explored in the forest but due to the presence of beehives, this decision is best left to the discretion of your guide.

Visitors are spoilt for choice with nearby added attractions like the Satpura national park (Madhai gate), Pench national park, Melghat tiger reserve, Pachmarhi, and cruises on the backwaters and river Tawa. Travellers can enjoy village tours, interact with locals and go on an anthropological excursion at Dhapada and other nearby villages. Ecotourism activities like learning about farming practices in the area, growing crops, and rearing their livestock can also be experienced.

This reserve is also a part of Pachmarhi Biosphere, a UNESCO designated reserve, along with Pachmarhi sanctuary, and Satpura National Park. Hence it is of great importance to the nature and wildlife of Central India. It is a very important transition zone between the forests of western and eastern India. This area lies in the Teak and Sal transition zone which makes it very interesting, also from the faunal point of view. Historically, many books written by British Indian officers mention the use of this forest for hunting expeditions. Till as recently as 1991 this area was intensively worked for Teak and Bamboo. Presently Conservation and Protection of this green oasis is of very high priority and is under the purview of the Government of India. The lodges and resorts in this area also play a responsible role in protecting and sustaining the delicate balance of this green ecosystem.

Bookings are done through the MP Online website, the resort Bori Safari Lodge or where you choose to stay or through travel agents. The Core Zone with the most sightings is open from 1st October to 30th June. While the Buffer Zone is also open from July to September.

Park Timings

Park timings are subject to sunrise and sunset. 2 time slots are available with a break in between when the park shuts down. Approximate park timings are : Morning - 5.30 a.m - 11.30 a.m Evening - 4 p.m - 7 p.m

Entry Fees

Divided into 2 parts. The Permit Fee for the Core zone is Rs.1550 and for the Buffer Zone is Rs. 1250. The Entry Fee is approximately Rs. 5000 for a Vehicle with 6 People with a guide and driver. This entry fee is decided on the spot, calculated with the amount of distance to be travelled.

By air : The nearest airport to Bori wildlife sanctuary is Bhopal airport, at a distance of 160 km and well connected by road. A second option is Nagpur airport at a distance of 240 km. Both airports have very good flight connectivity. All arrivals by flight, then need to take a cab transfer to a resort of their choice. By road: Bori wildlife sanctuary is very well connected by road, with Bhopal at a distance of 210 km, Nagpur at (250 km) and Jabalpur. Choice of transport can be buses or private taxi. Road conditions are good and remain open in all seasons.
